Accumulating Number Waypoints

Learn how to use Accumulating mode on number waypoints to automatically track running totals across progress updates.

Track cumulative progress on number-based goal waypoints by enabling Accumulating mode. Each progress update adds to a running total instead of replacing the previous value, eliminating the need for manual calculations when tracking metrics like hours completed, sessions attended, or units produced.

πŸ“„ How It Works

  1. Navigate to a participant's goal and add or edit a waypoint with a Number question type.

  2. Enable the Accumulating toggle in the waypoint settings.

  3. Optionally set a Target value to define the cumulative goal (e.g., 100 hours).

  4. When a progress update is submitted, the entered number is added to the running total rather than replacing it.

  5. The accumulated total is displayed on the waypoint detail page and in the progress update form.

βœ… Benefits

  • No manual math β€” Updaters enter only the new amount (e.g., "3 hours") and the system tracks the cumulative total automatically.

  • Clear progress visibility β€” The running total is shown alongside the target value so progress toward the goal is always visible.

  • Automatic goal completion β€” When the accumulated total meets or exceeds the target and a completion threshold is set, the waypoint can auto-complete.

βš™οΈ Key Details

  • Available for number-type waypoints only. The Accumulating toggle appears when the waypoint uses a number answer question.

  • Running total displayed during updates. When submitting a progress update, the form shows the current running total (and target if set) above the input field.

  • Placeholder text adapts. The input field shows "Enter amount to add" instead of "Enter number update" to clarify the expected input.

  • Accumulated Total on waypoint detail. The waypoint detail view displays the accumulated total alongside the target value.

  • Completion threshold uses accumulated value. Auto-completion compares the accumulated total against the target, not individual update values.

πŸ’‘ Best Practices

  • Set a target value. Pairing accumulating mode with a target gives clear visibility into how close the participant is to reaching their goal.

  • Use for metrics that grow over time. Hours of service, number of sessions attended, units completed, or miles walked are ideal use cases.

  • Do not use for metrics that replace. If each update should reflect the current state (e.g., a test score or weight), leave Accumulating off.

❓ FAQs

Where do I enable Accumulating mode?
When creating or editing a waypoint with a number question type, toggle Accumulating on in the waypoint settings.

Can I turn Accumulating on or off after progress updates have been submitted?
Yes, but be aware that toggling it will change how the total is calculated going forward. Existing progress update values are not modified.

Does this work with auto-complete?
Yes. When a completion threshold and target are set, auto-completion compares the accumulated total against the target.

What does the updater see differently?
The progress update form shows the current running total and the input placeholder reads "Enter amount to add" instead of "Enter number update."

Is the accumulated total included in reports and exports?
The accumulated total is shown on the waypoint detail view and in goal summary PDF exports.
