Categories help your team organize and filter items in Equip. Editing a category updates its name or color anywhere that category is already used, so you can keep your account organized without reassigning the category to each item manually.
How Categories Work
Categories are managed from Account Settings. Each category has a Name and a Color. The color controls how the category label appears in category lists, filters, and supported item views.
Category names must be unique within the account. If a category is already assigned to items, editing the category changes the category itself and keeps those existing connections in place.
Edit a Category
Open your profile menu.
Select Account Settings.
In the Data Properties section, select Categories.
Find the category you want to update.
Open the category actions menu.
Select Edit Category.
Update the Name or Color.
Select Update Category.
Color Options
Preset colors let you choose from the standard Equip category color options.
Custom Color lets you choose a custom Text Color and Background Color.
Use colors with enough contrast so category labels are easy to read in busy lists and filtered views.
What Changes After Editing
The updated category name appears anywhere the category is already assigned.
The updated color appears anywhere category labels are shown.
Items already using the category stay connected to the same category.
Filters that use the category continue to work with the updated category.
Permissions
Categories are account-level data properties. If you cannot open Categories from Account Settings or do not see Edit Category, your role may not include permission to manage account settings or categories.
Best Practices
Use clear category names that match how your team searches and filters work.
Avoid creating several categories with similar meanings, such as Employment, Jobs, and Work, unless your team has a clear reason for each one.
Review existing category usage before renaming a category so the new name still makes sense everywhere it appears.
Choose high-contrast colors so category labels are readable for all users.
FAQs
Will editing a category remove it from existing items?
No. Editing the category name or color keeps existing category assignments in place.
Can two categories have the same name?
No. Category names must be unique within the account.
Can I use a custom category color?
Yes. Choose Custom Color, then set the Text Color and Background Color.
Why don't I see Edit Category?
Your role may not include permission to manage account settings or categories.
Can I delete a category from this page?
Yes, but only categories that are not currently in use can be deleted. If a category is in use, Equip keeps it available so existing items do not lose their category assignment unexpectedly.
